An Architectural and Political Response to the Crisis
Date: -
Organiser: ANMA-F Paris
Location: Naples, Venice
Topical area: Integrated planning, Participatory governance, Architecture and urban design
Description:
In the context of the ongoing financial crisis, cities and citizens are going through profound and as yet uncharted transformations. In the first week of September 2012, two key groups of built-environment professionals will meet in the same week in Italy. In Naples, UN-Habitat's World Urban Forum will bring together mayors, international organizations, governments and civil-society organizations to discuss the Urban Future, whereas the largest Architecture Biennale in the world will kick off at the same time in Venice, bringing together the worlds of Design and Architectural Design around the theme Common Ground.
This short series of debates (in Venice on the 31st of August then in Naples on the 4th of September) held in parallel to these global events, in these very different parts of Italy, aims to bridge as well as examine the gap between these two spheres. We are hoping to develop an understanding of what this persistent division still means but also to blur the boundaries between designers and politicians; researchers and economists, to highlight new policies and practices which do not require funding from strained public coffers. Can new forms of city development be thought about without the contribution of private enterprise? Can the political and design worlds find "Common ground" in the face of urban decay and austerity? How can policy making and urban planning come together to bring about appropriate norms for improving urbanites' lives? This will be one of the focus areas for the ANMA Architects' new foundation ANMA-F.
