Time: 16:30 - 18:30

Organiser: WSUP/Water Aid

Location: Naples

Topical area: Integrated planning, Water, waste and sanitation, Sustainability

Description:

Cities in developing countries are undergoing dramatic demographic shifts, with unplanned urban settlements growing fast. Delivery of sustainable sanitation and water infrastructure and services is a huge challenge. With major barriers to providing access, poor areas and slums are likely to remain largely unserved.

  • How can urban spatial planning best serve the long-term sanitation and water needs of the cities of tomorrow?
  • How is it responding to the needs of the urban poor?
  • Is it fit for purpose to deal with the twin challenges of rapid urbanisation and climate change?
  • How to go from good planning to effective implementation?

This networking event will present a group of inspiring cities prepared to take the lead in addressing sanitation and water supply at scale. It will be a discussion between city mayors, planners and development support agencies. Panellists will share lessons learned from their pioneering work and introduce new spatial planning approaches to universal sanitation and water services delivery in Africa and Asia.

  • What lessons can developing country cities draw from the 'Asian Tiger' cities in the use of sanitation and water infrastructure investments for national development?
  • How can cities leverage the investment required for transformational city-wide sanitation and water services?
  • How can donors be part of the solution?
