Introduction:

Reporting to the WIEGO Communications Manager, this is a 3.5 day/week position on a renewable annual contract basis. The Writer/Editor will work from home (supplying own computer equipment and internet connection), be based in the global South and provide support to the WIEGO Communications Team as set out below.

Job Description:

  • Under direction of the WIEGO Programme Team, create new content for publications, including reports, funding proposals, press releases, fact sheets and other materials, from information and documentation provided
  • Substantively edit reports and other materials where required
  • Create and edit new content for the WIEGO websites, e-newsletters and blogs, from information and documentation provided
  • Summarize existing publications and researh to tailor materials for specific audiences
  • Develop and maintain the WIEGO style guide in relation to text
  • Participate as a member of the WIEGO Communications Team
  • Occasionally offer editing support to WIEGO partners and members
  • Other writing/editing support as required
  • Occasional international travel may be required

Person Specification:

Skills required:

  • Substantial writing and editing experience, emphasis on contract/freelance work and non-fiction (5 years+)
  • Excellent command of English grammar
  • Ability to adapt writing style to intended audience
  • Exposure to and experience with international development concepts, including urban planning issues AND/OR experience writing/editing research documents
  • Positive attitude, maturity, flexibility, strong teamwork abilities; ability to accept and respond to criticism
  • Ability to work in a virtual network, across time zones and with people from all cultures
  • Ability to edit effectively for non-native English writers
  • Enthusiasm for serving a global social movement
  • Ability to speak French would be considered an asset

This position is paid monthly in USD by wire transfer, based on an annual renewable contract. Daily rate for this position is according to the WIEGO fee scale, and will depend on qualifications and experience. Our organization contracts out of the UK and as such the position is self-employed, with the contractor responsible for all taxes and social costs.
